Interview: Joshua Jadon

Sin título

Tell us a little about yourself and your background?
For those who don’t know my name is Joshua, I am a book cover designer. I grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan and have lived here for the past 20 years. JoshuaJadon.com is my hub for doing all my design work for authors. My focus is creating eye-catching book cover designs for authors that will help them catch the attention of more readers to ultimately sell more books.

How do you think you’ve evolved creatively? I drew ALOT when I was younger. I remember riding the bus home in like 2nd grade and coming home to grab a TV tray and a pen, then watching my favorite show Imagination Station which helped teach me how to draw. To bad they canceled the show, it was such a great show and their aren’t many people out their that teach that on television. So yeah, drawing was pretty much my focus from age 6 to about senior year in high school.

Tell us about the cover/s and how it/they came about. I remember telling myself I don’t want to learn Photoshop. I had various opportunities to take the course in middle and high school but never did. Then finally in college after not using digital software at all to do my art I finally crossed over. The first assignment in my college Graphic Design class at Central Michigan University was on designing book covers and after I learned that I pretty much decided I needed to look no further for work. At that point class became less important than building my book cover design portfolio so I could then go onto launching my own site on the internet.

Sin título

I worked at a car wash called Sparkling Image for a good year or so while I was building up my website and then at one point I literally was just tired of working at the car wash and wanted to take this thing more seriously. So one rainy day at the car wash when I working and just came to the decision that I am done and would rather invest my time in building up my book cover design business. The funny thing is I hadn’t even made a sale yet when I quit working their, I had about $200 saved and just took the leap. A few weeks later I got my first sale and been at it ever since then.

Do you think that the cover plays an important part in the buying process? Yeah it’s crucial to increasing the amount of readers that see your book and actual readers who buy your book. The idea as an author or self-publisher is to come out with a book that’s going to sell right? So it only makes sense to pair the writing up a great cover design. When a customer is looking at a book cover design there are only a few seconds of opportunity to catch that readers attention and get them interested. This is why it’s so important to a cover that really pulls them in.

Why did you choose this route? I’ve always liked designing and creating things from ideas so when I finally realized I wanted to continue doing this and as a career it became pretty clear on what the next steps I needed to take in order to make it happen. I can say though being persistent and not quitting is what has kept me going.

Did you make any marketing mistakes or is there anything you would avoid in future? Yeah, to be honest at first I didn’t really know what would work for me. After I got my first sale though I realized “Oh, so social media does work.”. Building up a presence online has been a key factor for finding new authors to design covers for. At first I think the biggest thing I failed with was understanding and believing in what I was doing and knowing that it would actually work if I just kept trying things and seeing what would result from them. In the future I would avoid guessing on what I am doing without a real purpose behind it. That just leads to more wasted time. Being clear and focused on things while taking decisive action has brought me a long way.

Is there anything else you would like to add that I haven’t included? Yes, have faith in what you’re doing and embrace the process and steps it’s going to take to get wherever it is you want to go. Maybe you want to become a best-selling author, the idea is to clarify this before hand so all the steps you take are aligned to the outcome you’d like. Take action combined with the necessary steps and you can almost guarantee you’re on the right path. And if you’re not, you just adjust along the way and keep going. It doesn’t matter if you’re a designer or a author or a car washer, what matters is the result you really want. Being uncomfortable for me has helped me see okay I can either keep doing what I am doing or move through it and get to the other side. The last thing my art teacher in high school told me was “don’t settle” and I am just now really seeing what she is talking about.

Meet an Author: Isabel Brann

Tell us a little about yourself and your background?

Hi! My name is Isabel Brann and I was born and raised in Venezuela. I’ve recently defended my thesis which was the last step to finish my five year bachelor’s degree in Classical Languages and Literatures (a.k.a. A lot of Ancient Greek and Latin classes). I’m the eldest child of two and the only girl. I’m single (if I add “and ready to mingle?” would this sound too much like an online profile for a dating site?), I don’t have pets at the moment and I love reading as much as writing.

Which writers inspire you? So many! Off the top of my head I could mention: Homer, Pamela Clare, Kresley Cole, Nalini Singh, Jeaniene Frost, RJ Loom, and G.A. Aiken.

Have you written any other novels in collaboration with other writers? Not yet but I would love to!

When did you decide to become a writer?
I don’t think I can pinpoint an exact date. I always knew I wanted to be a writer, as clichéd as that sounds. However, I started taking the steps to publish my debut novella after my mom discovered she had an aneurysm in her head and, luckily, was able to have surgery in time. Facing the possibility of losing such an important person in my life made me realize I didn’t have time to waste. I couldn’t wait for the “perfect” time because it would never come.

Do you write full-time or part-time?

I’m a part-time writer. I’ve just finished my bachelor’s degree and I’m going to start applying for graduate school soon so it’ll be part-time for a while longer.

Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you?

I start a general outline of things I need to happen and in what order… and then my hands do whatever they want whether it agrees with the plot or not!

Do you have a strategy for finding reviewers?

I’m a new author so I’m still finding my way. So far I inquire bloggers that have it stated on their pages that they are open to review and submit my book to them. It doesn’t always work but I’ve met some amazing bloggers that way.

What are your thoughts on good/bad reviews?

Opinions are like butts, everybody has one. A bad review doesn’t mean your book is trash, nor does a good one means is the best in the world. It’s all about what people like or doesn’t like. I try to be very open to them. The good ones make me smile, especially when I see a reader caught things I was hoping to transmit and unsure if I had managed. The bad ones I try not to take personally and see if I can improve from them. The ones that are not constructive but an attack on the author as a person, those I Ignore.

How can readers discover more about you and you work?

I’m in social media and I love to talk to readers! You can find me on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/isabelbrann/) and on Twitter, as well ( https://twitter.com/isabelbrann). Or you can email me at isabelbrann@gmail.com

Any Comments for the Blog readers?

Thank you! You’re the ones that keep the Indie community alive and thriving!

Any feedback for me or the blog?
No. Just a thank you for the opportunity and the support!

Meet an author: Savannah Verte

INTRODUCING SAVANNAH VERTE

GOOD MORNING!!!! (Yes, this is my greeting regardless of the hour.)
My name is Savannah Verte and this is my first Authors After Dark. I CAN NOT FREAKING WAIT!!!
I was first published in 1990 after I graduated college. (Thank Goddess that book is out of print.) I have written everything from poetry to paranormal, and contemporary women’s fiction to mystery/suspense. I don’t fit cleanly into a category, or two, so I call myself a Contemporary Vagabond, emphasis on the vagabond. At AAD I’ll have a few titles with me; Viva Zapata & the Magic 8-Ball, Kingdoms Fall (the 3rd Vengelys book, but I’ll have 1 & 2 as well), Book of Time, and Book of Change (book 1 & the prequel for The Custos series). If you are wanting a specific title, shoot me an inbox and I’ll gladly hold it aside for you. I am bringing limited quantities because I’m flying this time and I already have 3 checked bags to get all the books & swag to Savannah.

Meet an author: Kiki Meyer

INTRODUCING KIKI MEYER

FAIRY TALE ENDINGS FOR TOUGH WOMEN

As a new writer, I am really looking forward to Authors After Dark in Savannah from August 3 through 7, where I will release my second book! (And I never thought I could write even one.) Both of my books are a part of a series with other writer friends. I hope that what I write rings true for large numbers of women and men who can deal with strong women.

I write sweet and dreamy HEAs (that are also a bit sexy). I always wanted a large happy family where each member loved the other unconditionally and comfort could always be found within the confines of the home wherever that was.

Meet an author: Elaine Calloway

Introducing Elaine Calloway

Greetings, Authors After Dark Attendees and More!

I’m Elaine Calloway and I’m one of the authors who will be at Authors After Dark. There are many opportunities to come hang out with me! I’ve listed all the activities where you can find me below.

Soooo…books! I write paranormal and urban fantasy, and currently I have two series going:

  • Southern Ghosts Series – a paranormal mix of romantic suspense, humor, and ghost stories. My new release at AAD, THE DEBT, is in this series and I have ten books planned.
  • Elemental Clan Series – an urban fantasy with good vs evil themes between Elementals and Fallen Angels. I’m giving away 50% coupons for the last book in this series that releases in November, so stop by and get one at the book signing!

I grew up in New Orleans with a love of cemeteries and the paranormal. No mystery as to why now my books focus on those themes! Some folks call me “Paranormal with a Southern Twist” since my books have specific Southern locales and euphemisms.

This will be my first year at AAD but I went to TNEE in April and loved it!

Met an author: Tilly Greene

INTRODUCING TILLY GREENE

I’m Tilly Greene, author of erotic romances full of … wait, you don’t know me? Well let’s rectify that, let me tell you a bit about me.

I write hot romances and I mean scorching HOT. Yes, there is BDSM involved with most the stories and while that element helps make them steam even more, I also work to make this element relatable to those that aren’t in the life. I enjoy the heat and making characters a comfort to you as the reader and bringing them together with love and sex. Oh yes, there’s lots of sex! The fun part for me extends to the subgenres I choose to write. While I’ve written a Historical and Vampire stories, and touched on Futuristics, my focus has been on Contemporaries, Shape Shifters and Mythological Paranormals.

There, that’s a bit about me, now for the fun part … what I’m doing at Authors After Dark!

Michelle Irwin has been many things in her life: a hobbit taking a precious item to a fiery mountain; a young child stepping through the back of a wardrobe into another land; the last human stranded not-quite-alone in space three million years in the future; a young girl willing to fight for the love of a vampire; and a time-travelling madman in a box. She achieved all of these feats and many more through her voracious reading habit. Eventually, so much reading had to have an effect and the cast of characters inside her mind took over and spilled out onto the page.

DILECTI SURGEMUS - SOCII POLLEMUS

Serie: Hasea Chronicles
Language: english
Review:
love it so much, I'm always glad how this book are written they had the perfect amount of drama, romance, action and blend so well that it makes you feel part of the story altogether.
In this particular book what I liked most was that the characters developed themselves so much through a lot of experiences and the adding of Death breaker make the book so much more interesting at this point, Dellagio's story was super heartbreaking but I did liked it too, and the story have gone so complex that reminds you sometimes of life itself and how it can be so interesting and crushing at times too.
I can't wait enough to se what will happens next on the conclusion.
