Review: The Case of Charles Dexter Ward

129327

I loved this one, the idea of obsessing so much about something that it get so under control that you lost yourself it's an interesting view, and more when you have read so much of Lovecraft that you know those events weren't completely random but part of a greater plan.

For me Charles was unfortunate in his passion that was all, maybe if he could have drop the investigation sooner he could have been saved, but he just couldn't and it consumed him.

If you are searching for a good psychological thriller this is the one you need to read.

It’s the perfect setting for a romantic getaway at sea: Caribbean breezes, clear blue skies, passionate nights, and murder? Not exactly what Detective Charlie McClung and Marian had in mind for their honeymoon. When one of their fellow passengers is murdered on her 35th wedding anniversary, Charlie and Marian get pulled into the investigation. Who would want to kill poor Tammy Ferguson in such a brutal way? As Charlie uncovers more sordid details about Tammy and her husband, Peter, it becomes clear that someone else has found the same skeletons in the Ferguson’s closet and Tammy has paid the price. Is Peter next?
Trapped on the ship with an insidious killer, shadows seem more ominous and even the most innocent faces seem sinister. Has Charlie inadvertently put Marian in harm’s way? How long does Charlie have before the hunter becomes the hunted?

EXCERPT - MY LADY, MY SPY

Josephine finally escaped the crowded ballroom and entered the foyer. She looked around, but found no sign of Frederick or his brother. They’d both disappeared. Movement above her on the balcony caught her attention. Was that Frederick? When he spotted her, he ducked out of sight, but she’d seen him. Of that she was certain. Why had he gone up there? Was he merely curious about the building’s renovations? She dismissed the idea. There was more than mere curiosity driving his actions. She moved toward the staircase, intending to follow him, but a large footman stepped in front of her, blocking the way. “Upstairs area is restricted,” the man said in a thick Russian accent. “No guests allowed.” Josephine glanced at the balcony again, but couldn’t spot Frederick. She knew better than to mention his flouting of the rules to the footman. Frederick must have evaded him by taking an alternate route upstairs. She acquiesced and stepped away, glancing around the grand foyer. She spotted a door on the far side of the room leading toward the embassy offices. It wasn’t guarded. Perhaps she’d find another staircase back there. A children’s choir began singing. The other guests around her moved. As a group passed between her and the man guarding the staircase, Josephine slipped through a side door and found herself in a corridor lined with embassy offices. There should be another, less opulent staircase nearby. The office doors were all closed, but about halfway down the hallway she noticed one standing slightly ajar. She hurried closer to open it and when she discovered a servants’ staircase, she grinned. Frederick must have taken this route. Josephine lifted the hem of her skirt and crept up the stairs. Her night around would end in disaster if she ran into one of the embassy’s servants. Those Russian footmen looked intimidating. She paused when she reached the landing. The door leading to the corridor was closed, but she heard someone just outside. She paused as she tried to identify the odd shuffling sound that seemed to be moving away from her. Cautiously, she edged open the door and peeked into the hallway. A man was sliding a cloth along the floor with his shoe, wiping up what appeared to be water. Not just any man. Frederick. She pushed open the door and stepped through. At the sound, he spun to face her. His jaw dropped as his piercing blue eyes widened in surprise.“Josephine? What in blazes are you doing up here?” “You canceled our plans for tonight. Imagine my surprise when you strolled through the ballroom.” She gave him a cold smile. “I thought I’d give you an opportunity to explain yourself before I set the dogs on you, so to speak.”

Michael Forester Interview

Styling by Sam Thompson

Picture Taken by Dom Fleming

Tell us a little about yourself and your background?

I’m a UK writer, 59 years old for a few more months yet (!).  I’m severely deafened and I live with my hearing dog, Matt.

I’ve been writing full time for a year now after completing a career in business. I divide my time between the New Forest in the UK and Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Tenerife is where I do most of my writing. When in the UK, I work more on promoting my books.

Which writers inspire you?

There have been so many over the years! Current writers that leap to mind include Yan Martel, Kazuo Ishiguro and Salman Rushdie. My literary heroes from the past are people such as John Steinbeck, T S Eliot, George Orwell, Franz Kafka. All these and many more have influenced my writing. I am proud to acknowledge them as my teachers.

Dragonsong Spotlight

Rebekah, daughter of Merlin and noblewoman of Albion has been driven to madness by the murder of her lover Vidar. In her torment she bargains with the Prince of Demons to turn her into a dragon. Once transformed, she seeks to take revenge upon her father, Merlin, whom she is fooled into believing is responsible for Vidar’s death.

Behind the subterfuge stands Oberon, Captain-King of Elves, who cannot foresee the devastation his jealousy and unrequited love for Rebekah will unleash upon the world of Gaia. Its salvation depends on the retrieval of the Sleep Stone from the gates of Hell. But if the stone is not returned the demon army will awake and ransack Gia in a war that will destroy its existence. Time is the solution – but only if the gods of Asgard can nd a way of stopping it.

Dragonsong is a unique epic fantasy that explores fundamental themes of good and evil, jealously and revenge. Woven together with a gripping and powerful plot, the pattern of the language, the musicality of the form and the profound emotions invoked carry the reader to extremes of human experience and capability at both its best and worst.
